Tour de Cure - Riding to raise funds for Cancer Research
Having already raised over $2.1 million for cancer research, Tour de Cure is a community initiative dedicated to raising funds for cancer research through a series of bike rides held throughout the year across Australia.
Tour de Cure’s main event, their Signature Tour, took place on 3 May, with those participating completing an 11 day ride from Brisbane to Mission Beach in north Queensland.
A number of 1 Day Tour rides are also planned for 2012, including a series of ‘Inspire Your Community Corporate Ride Days’ held in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. All proceeds generated by these events will go towards research projects focused on finding a cure for cancer, as well as cancer support groups and cancer prevention projects.
Cancer continues to be the leading cause of death in Australia, with research indicating that 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of cancer by the age of 85, according to Cancer Council Australia.
With more than 43,000 people estimated to have died due to cancer in 2010, cancer is also the number one reason for claiming on trauma insurance. The four main types of cancers that cause men and women to claim on their trauma policy are:
Men
• Prostate
• Bowel
• Lung
• Melanoma of the skin
Women
• Lung
• Breast
